Dwarf puffer

I know that dwarf puffers can't eat MTS because their shells are too hard for the DP's. But I have sand in my tank and will need MTS's to stir the sand up to prevent ammonia pockets. Does this mean I can't have a dwarf puffer in a tank with sand, unless I don't use MTS's? Any advice or past experience much appreciated!
