I have a spare 10g tank that i want to set up for dwarf puffers and maybe a trio of otos. I am going to cycle it with platys as i did my tank with these last time and it worked fine. My question is how many platys shall i put in so that the bio load will be approximatly the same when i swap these out and put my puffers in? I know alot of you don't agree with fish in cycles but that is how i am going to do it sorry!

I have a 95g set up atm but i dont really want to use any of the media as i have been loosing fish like mad the last few days but i don't know what is causing it. I don't want to spread anything.

Just curious but why do you WANT to do a fish in cycle when you know better? There is zero advantage to it and doing a fishless cycle will mean you know for sure that there is enough bacteria to cover the bio load. Espeically as both dwarf puffers and otos are quite sensitive.

There is nothing i can do to sort out the other tank. There are no symptoms at all there just dying. The main reason i was thinking of a fish in cycle was because I cannot find any where that sells ammonia near me.

buying things online works out a rip off with postage included.

You can do a fishless cycle without ammonia....not the best way, but you can use fish food or even some shrimp that you buy at the grocery store (like you would get to eat). There really isn't any good reason why not to do a fishless cycle anymore - probably should be banned; if that was possible. You wouldn't bring a dog home to have it die or suffer long term injuries so that you can have another one, would you?

Do you have a thread open about your other tank? Maybe someone can help you get that in order. Nothing is unsolvable.

As far as the puffers go, you probably only want to have one of them in a 10 gallon tank....depending on what you are looking at - there are many types of dwarf puffers.

Hi rodg98133 :)

This isn't a thread about dwarf puffers, it's about cycling. I'm going to move it to the New to the Hobby section where you can get advice about that.

Hi rodg98133 :)

I would strongly advise you to figure out what went wrong with your first tank before starting another one. Then you can simply clone it from the first. If you don't resolve the problem with your first tank, the trouble could quit possibly spread to the new one too.
