Hi folks, I have a cycled 6g (UK) planted tank with 4 neons & an apple snail, would it be possible to add a puffer fish to this mix or would I need to remove the neons (to my other tank) & add marine salt to the tank? are there any puffers happy in FW?
thanks.

I have three Dwarf Puffers in a 60l f/w tank....they can be aggressive little fish though, so the tank needs to be really heavily planted. I'm also in the process of setting up a tank for some South American puffers....also fresh water and around 147l, I'm looking for a challange  ....as these fish need their beaks clipping!!!!!

Have a look in the Oddball section for more dedicated posts and topics on F/W Puffers

theres a small chance that your neons will live as there fast but more and likely will be eaten
and your snail will be eaten alive in minutes

sorry to be blunt but these guys really need a tank to there selfs

Lol.....didn't even contemplate the snail  .....Puffer dinner in minutes!!!!!!

I would have thought apple snails would be far too big for a dwarf puffer to prey on. Any exposed soft bits might get nipped but otherwise I would have thought not a real problem. I have one dwarf puffer that lives with a congo frog and one mountain minnow. They all seem quite happy living in there together. There use to be another puffer in the tank but he liked jumping from the water and since my hood broke I had to go topless with a 36W PC tube on a DIY suppport. The result of him jumping was that he managed to clear the side and I found him four days later pretty crispy down the cabinet side.

Dwarf puffers IIRC require 3g per fish and a heavily planted tank to minimise aggression. In your case 6g is probably sufficient for two puffers but remove the neons or they will have no tails by the end of the first day.

Regards

any snail even apple's would be slowly eaten

My puffer lives happily with trumpet snails not interested in them in the slightest. Just my experience although I know that is their usual diet.

Any size of snail will eventually get nibbled on. Not nice for the snail imho.

I always recommend 5 gals per dp minimum, so 6 gals is still only suitable for one. The smaller the space the more aggression there will be regardless of the recommendations.

Just my experiences ;)
