I have some guppies and ive seen dwarf gouramis just a few questions

1. will they be ok with guppies (my LFS have them in with guppies but they do have about half a dozen or few more in the same tank)
2. will they be ok as a solitary fish (or would 2 males or a male and female be ok)

Only pleasant comments or positive criticism please NO rude or nasty comments.

yea they'l be fine, i know some one who keeps dwarf honey gouramis and guppys with no probz.....and ive kept one male dwarf gourami and he used o follow an angel fish round all day, til they both died :'(

When I introduced 6 guppies into my tank, which contains 1 Dwarf Gourami, two of them died within 2 days. Over the next week I noticed that the gourami would chase another two of them and 1 started to hide and eventually died. I'm pretty sure it was due to the stress of being chased by the gourami. The remaining three are doing fine, but I still occasionally see the gourami chase them........so be warned!

Ok thanx for the very helpful replies :D

Forgot to mention that the four he liked to chase were 2 different colours. The two he mailnly leaves alone are another colour (I had 3 different colours of guppies in total), so it may just be certain fish colours that annoy him.

At the end of the day, it will depend on the personality of the fish. If you add a DG just keep a close eye on the behaviour over the first day. You might have more luck considering you are adding the DG AFTER the guppies, so he wont have set up his territory before he 'meets' them.

Ideally you are better to have one male to two females and lots of plants and hiding places. The male will then have the distraction of the females rather than the other fish. You will need to have hiding places to give the females a chance to hide and de-stress from the males attentions. :good:

Ok thanx im in the process of getting lots of plants for my tank, the tank itsself is 60 to 70L and id thought of one male and one female?
with plenty of plant coverage and hiding places

I started with two Dwarf Gourami and took one back as it was a bully. They only fought amongst themselves but it was constant and a territorial issue.
These are quite intelligent fish with their own personalities so I would say take some time to watch them at the shop and get an idea of their traits before you pick one out.

My 1 x D Gourami is doing fine by himself now :)

your better off gettin one male or two females to the one male as he will pester her to death usually

Gah i dont like the look of females  they are just so plain.

Not all female Dwarf gourami are plain, just the vast majority. Get used to telling the sexes apart then you can go in and pick out the better coloured females.
I have a blue female (yes a definate female, I bred her early in the year).

Gourami's should be kept and sold in pairs!

The known ratio for Gouramis is 1 male to 2 females, this is because the male will bully the female. If there are two females then there will be two to share the load so that the male doesn't constantly chase 1 and stress the fish to death.

Gouramis kept in pairs will not last long unless it is a very well planted tank.
