Hi

I have one dwarf gourami, did have two but one died, since my other died, I do not know what it died of , it had a swollen stomach though...my remaining gourami, seems to spend most of its time in a little space right next to the filter, it used to swim about all over the tank, but seems very miserable, looks very healthy and although it does not come out at feeding time as much, it does eat... just wondering if this is normal for them not to swim about much? It just looks right depressed...:(

Hmmm right, well I did try adding another gourami after the other died, but she did not like it at all, chased it all over the tank, so had to take it out, but in saying that, I think it was also a female, but the one that died was also female and she didnt chase that one around at all, infact they seemed to get on really well....swimming about together, so you reckon if I got her a male, she might perk up a bit?

Am I correct in thinking that males are more colourful? The one I have is like a golden colour, with a red/orange tint on the fins?

in standard dwarf gouramis the males are colourful and the females are silver. Most shops only carry males because females don't sell due to their drab colouring.

The fish that died from bloating up had an internal bacterial infection. Dwarf gouramis are renowned for this and most suffer from it sooner or later.

OK thanks for that colin...well I have just been to get a male to see if it will perk my female up a bit...he is acting all shy at the moment, but starting to inspect his new home..I am just hoping she will start to venture out more now, at the moment she is at one end of the tank hiding and he is at the other end hiding in some plants...lol.

have you got many floating plants in the tank. If not maybe add some more. Water Sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides) is one of the better plants for this. Gouramis are surface dwellers and if there isn't enough cover in the tank they will be more inclined to hidingin a corner.
Also if the water isn't up to scratch they will sulk too.
