For the past day or two I've noticed one of my Gourami's have white spots on them, I have included a picture, he seems fine swimming around, most importantly he's still eating

Can anyone diagnose?

Size of tank in gallons please.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Sorry but I can't make much out in the picture. Are the spots the size of a grain of salt, or bigger?

40 gallon Aquarium,

2 Dwarf Gourami's, 1 Albino Shark, 3 Silver Bala Sharks, 3 Clown Loaches, 4 Albino Tiger Barbs, 3 Red Crabs, 1 Whiptail Catfish, 1 Brittle Nose Catfish & 1 Albino Brittle Nose Catfish

Water stats unfortunately haven't got a water testing kit yet :(

Yeah I'd say they bigger, hard to describe it, looks patchy

You need to get your water tested. Take a sample of your water to the LFS and ask them if they wouldn't mind writing the readings
down for you.

Do the spots have any red, pink areas. Pink or red on the inside of the patch, or outside of the patch.
Any signs of fluffy cotton wool patches? Or bleaching beneath the skin?
Any signs of flicking and rubbing?

Just check out this article to see if it resembles columnaris.

for those who helped and are interested, I recently took a sample of water to my lfs, and the ammonia levels were through the roof!, so I'm battling that at the moment, really helpful staff at my lfs, from the picture I showed them they suggested to use some 'Melafix', which treats everything bar white spot, so I'm going to see how that goes *fingers crossed*

Thank you for the update.
Keep dong daily water changes to fetch your ammonia reading down.

Good Luck.

I was told by forumites that Melafix is harmful to labyrinth fish like gouramis as it damages the labyrinth. I have accidentally used it in the tank with my DG before I found out and he seems fine.

Just a quick update, Melafix has fixed the issue!. My Dwarf Gourami seems to be fit & healthy now, the white patchy thing has gone

happy days!.

Only problem is all my fish are still swimming at the top, and my catfish are also up & down in the tank all the time. I have been testing the water and these are my results;

24.11.2012
Nitrate NO3 = 10
Nitrate NO2 = 1
(GH) General Hardness = 16
(KH) Carbonate Hardness = 10
pH = 7.6
Chlorine = 0.8

25.11.2012
Nitrate NO3 = 0
Nitrate NO2 = 0
(GH) General Hardness = 16
(KH) Carbonate Hardness = 10
pH = 7.2
Chlorine = 0.8

26.11.2012 (10% Water Change)
Nitrate NO3 = 0
Nitrate NO2 = 0
(GH) General Hardness = 16
(KH) Carbonate Hardness = 10
pH = 7.2
Chlorine = 0

Any ideas/suggestions?
