Will dwarfs be fine in a community tank with tetras and platies... etc

I don't see why not.. Mine were more than happlily getting along with my cardinal tetras (i say were, not because the Dwarf G died, but not due to any compatability problems).

1 male to 2 females is advisable. I can vouch for that.. they do chase the ladies

One male to multiple females is best as they will go so far as to kill a female that refuses to breed, but with a group there should be less agression.
