Hi
I Have recently bought 2 Dwarf Gorami, i noticed some fighting in the bag. I have had them for about a week now. At first they were chasing each other quite alot but it seemed to stop after acople of days. There were afew days were they were quite peacefully swimming around, but one of them seems to have gone into hiding, he comes out to eat though, and i have also noticed that sometimes they swim around quite happily together. i hear thet for two male dwarf goramis you need alot of plants for territories and stuff. I Have quite a few plants but they are still small. Will they be alright after the plants grow up? And if not what is the best thing to do?

Also While im here, Will Dwarf Puffers go well with Dwarf Gorami, Banjo Catfish and Japonica Shrimp?

Thanks For Your Help, (If You Give It) lol

I had 2 male dwarf gouramis, one died but not because of the other one. It's quite strange really as mine never used to fight and got on very well.
What other tank mates do you have in there? How new is the tank? Are you sure they are both male? The best thing to do is get some big plants from your local fish shop, stick em all in near the back and see how things get on but they should settle down eventually. The reason one is hiding is probably cause he has his territory which is good and things seem as if theyre improving. Once theres more plants they should be ok.

it is generally said for hte majority of gouramis, dwarfs being one of them, that unless u have a good sized tank with lots of unoccupied territories for them to claim, 2 males will not work. i experienced this the hard way with opaline gouramis.. and read up before buying dwarfs to avoid the issue. what sized tank?

I have 2 Yo Yo Loaches, 1 Banjo Catfish, and 2 Japonica Shrimp in there aswel., I have had the tank for about 4 weeks now, and i got the goramis about a week ago. And yeah i know there both male because they are both about the same size and have the bright colouring. Also the tank is ablout 40 Liters i think. It is 60 cm long, 30 cm wide and about 30 cm high. And thenks, I'lll try and get some big plants next time i go to the lfs.

I had 2 male Dwarf Gourami but they fought so much i had to take one back to the shop.I thought my tank would be big enough for them to settle into their own territories but nope  (and my tanks twice the size of yours).

yea small tank, try plants and hiding spots (caves, etc..).. if its still a problem then rehoming might be required.

goodluck

i definitely would not add the dwarf puffers to your tank. they are cool finish, (my girlfriend has a couple), but they're nasty fish at the same time. they have a tendency to be aggresive and extremely territorial. don't be fooled by their small size! i would keep them in a species only tank (5-10 gallons per puffer)

Ok. Yeah i have been doin some reading up on them and decided that they are too violent, but thenks anyway. :good:

Hmmmm thats odd that you both say that because I have 2 Male Dwarf Gouramis in my tank and they get on well they swim together. They also some times stay to their own sides of the tank. However I have never seen them fight properly one will chase the other if he has moved into his teritory.

But thats to be expected. IF you tank is small then they will fight more because there is less room and the teritories will overlap.

Yeah, mine hav stopped fighting for the most part now so i think it must have been something to do with settling into the new tank or something, or maybe its because i have more fish now, i dunno lol

How many plants do you have in your tank?

The more plants the better as it will break up the line of sight the gouramis will have and then less fighting?

ummm I have guite afew plants, but not as many as i would like, actuly when i put the gorami in the plants were quite small so maybe the fact that the plants have grown alott bigger has stopped the fighting. But i mite get some more plants sometime soon. Heres a link to some pics of my tank so you can see how many plants i have from that. you'll have to scroll down to the bottom to see the most recent pic's. http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=257075&hl=

Right well that big plant you have in the middle is really nice however you are going to need more than that. Even if they are plastic ones. The reason I say is because gouramis are relativly peaceful fish the males can get aggressive in terms of dominance and teritory. The more plants you have the more obstacles that are in the way to break up the line of sight. For the reason that there looks to be little planted area then this could cause fights amoung the gouramisa as there is also little to be teritorial over.

Okay thanks. I was gonna get another big plant to cover up the filter and stuff and fill the big gap above the bogwood, it just looks sa little plain lol but yeah thnks anyway lol.

I had 2 male and 2 female and one male got sick and then all of them started picking on him. He eventually died but not necessarily because of the picking but they sure didn't help either. Now, the only male gourami aggressively chases the two females. I don't think he's trying to breed or anything. They say dwarf gouramis are small peaceful community fish but no. Males AND females like to nip other similar size looking fish also.
