Im gonna sound really stupid to all u lot but I was just wondering that if fish that are not of the same breed but still within the same fish family can breed? Can they!?! For example a guppy and a platy? Cos they're from the same family of fish and have similar features but they are still very different fish hmmmm... ooh and if they did breed would their offspring be valid and also be able to have little kiddy fish?

I'll tell the whole story when I find out the answer...my fish keeping has gone a bit down hill and I have had to reduce the amount of fish I keep cos I just dont have any time for them at the moment cos I'm doing my GCSE's but it will be summer hols soon and I'm planning to revamp my tank! Blimey that was one long sentence!

Any way plz tell me and don't shout at me for my stupidity!

Some similar fish can cross-breed but I don't think guppies and platys can.

Just to note - for most fish, we'd be talking about different species, not breeds. Breeds are sub-divisions of a single species; you could probably call plakats and VTs different "breeds" of bettas, though I think most fishkeepers more refer to types.
That said, all breeds of a same species can interbreed. However, I think you are asking about cross-breeding species. While it is possible, they would most likely have to be in the same genus, and closely related in terms of courtship behavior, mating mechanisms, etc.

Rightyho that make sense cheers guys. I see now that if they were different breeds of platy they could have fry but guppies and platies are not closely related enough to actually be able to breed...CHEERS! Yeah that's cool the reason why I asked though is cos we no longer have any female guppies there are only a few males left. And boys being boys they seem to have to take there urges elsewhere and have been harrassing my female platy called Pip (short 4 Phillipa... )
