It normally comes in unwanted on plants and within a month or two, no matter how little there was, it will probably be covering your tank.

A lot of fish don't mind it, though the roots aren't as long as other floaters that allow the fish to actually hang out in them.

You can, however, use duckweed as a filter to remove nutrients and nitrates from the water by letting it grow and then harvesting it.
