Help

I'm at the end of my teather!!

About six weeks ago I bought five female guppies and one male guppy, one by one I have lost them all, to what I think was dropsy. They swelled up like balloons, became inactive, sitting at the top of the tank, stopped feeding and then died. I tried feeding peas incase it was constipation but to no avail.

I am doing regular water changes and hoovering tank. I have cut down of food to once a day and have reduced quantity of food :( as I have seen a slight spike in ammonia. All other readings Ok but I am checking daily. Unsure whether spike due to dying fish or perhaps too much food but I removed dead fish immediately and have cut food right down.

Now one of my beloved black widows has developed pop eye. What can I do? Can I use salt as I have Leopard and Peppered corries in the tank and a spotted raphael catfish.

Help I can't bear to loose anymore fish.

Thanks in advance. :(

Also used Mexazin in tank for guppies incase it was bacterial infection some fin rot seen. Since then algae has grown on side of tank which plec has now started to remove.

Hi there.
I'm really sorry to here about your fish :( Might sound obvious but did your tank cycle before you put the fish in or did you put them in straight away? If you did a fishless cycle and the tank has only developed an ammonia spike since you added fish then you're doing all the right things. Dropsy is usually incurable I'm afraid and the fish may have already been infected when you got them (if that's what it is.)

The only thing you can do is keep testing daily and water changing if ammonia/nitrate present. If the fish continue to die then I would drain down the tank and sterilise it and start again. Hope you manage to keep some of your fish!!

Good luck.

For the popeye you will need to use anti internal bacteria med.
