Hey... I got a really nice peace of driftwood in upstate New York can i use it in my tank
What do i have to do to it.

Ok, there are several methods. But firstly make sure or ask someone if its Ok to use in your aquarium. Some wood can be dangerous. So are you certain its a safe wood? And where abouts did you get it?

Firstly, you can leave it too soak in abucket for a couple of months to let the tannins oot, by conducting regular, 100% water changes on the bucket

Or

You could but it in a pot and boil it to death!

PS, ive also heard of some one on here putting theres in the oven!!! :*) But NOT recommended, as WOOD could be FLAMABLE....some ppl. LOL

What I did when I found a peice of wood in my stream was boil it for roughly an hour (If you can-sometimes the peices are too long), then I soaked it in some vinigar (I don't think you have to soak it in vinigar. If you are happy that the wood is thoroughly clean don't bother), then I ploped it in my 50 gallon tank that houses angels, rasboras and rainbows. It has been around a month and a bit since then and every thing is fine.
And the peices look great!

I just soaked mine in a bucket for a couple days, with changing 100% of the water every 6hrs. and it looks fine, been in my tank for about a month now.

Well I geuss I should say that even though I found the wood at the end of January (ice and snow) there was aquatic bugs that were moving on the wood! Although the fish would have probably loved to eat live food I didn't want to take a chance so I boiled the wood instead.

I would also be cautious with the wood being found out side because of polutions. I knew the stream I took my peice of wood out of starts off as a natural spring on my property and we don't add toxins to it. I don't know how to remove polution from wood as wood can be a great sponge.
