So when I was given the tank I currently have I was also given a piece of driftwood that he had in the tank (bought from fish store) I didn't put it in at first but now after rethinking I want to add it however it will not sink (kinda figured it wouldn't after not being in water for awhile). So my question is what is the best method to get it to sink without having to use suction cups or silicone or attempt to drill slate and the wood to attach it to? I currently have it soaking in a 5gal bucket with a piece of rope going across to keep it sunk down but don't know if this is the correct way to get it to sink or if there is something else I have to do.

Most wood should eventually sink if soaked for long enough. If you've got a bit that's taking ages then just weighing down with a strategically placed rock should do the trick (make sure you use something like granite which isn't going to react with your water).

Yes you're doing it right, keep it in there for about a week or so and it should sink ok, if the water changes colour change it as its leaking tannins and if its been kept outside you're probably be best boiling it in some water to kill any bugs.

I'm still learning, most of which has been through this site, so you're probably be best wait and double check with someone else, just to be safe.

Well I'm hoping the tannin will not happen due to the friend I got this tank from had it in his tank and before he added it to this tank he had it int he tank he currently still has. However I have read that info about it so will be on the lookout if that happens. I don't know if there are any other ways I can sink it without doing what I'm currently doing but I'm open for suggestions other than waterlogging it.

Sounds like you're doing it right.
We had a piece of wood that didn't sink, so I just put it in the tank, and put rocks on it to keep it down lol.
Left it like that for about a week, and it stayed down on its own :)
