Driftwood

Bog wood comes from swamps and is known to leech tannins to the tank.

Driftwood comes from the ocean, and can alter the tank's salinity. I don't know if they leech tannins.

salinity? is this bad for the fish? i have twisted wood is this driftwood also? thanks

you can also find driftwood in freshwater lakes.
Woops, I was thinking about the ocean too much.

If you get driftwood from the ocean it may be contaminated with salt, which may be harmful to some fish. I can't give you an answer about your wood, as I don't know what it is.

If you don't have the wood in your tank already, boil it. This will kill any bacteria on it, as well as remove some of the tannins. If it still floats after boiling just soak it in a tub of water for a few days until it does.

Does boiling get rid of all the salt?

I have just bought a large piece of Driftwood from Shirley Aquatics and I'm currently soaking it in a tub out in the garden.

I have a mormyrid in my tank so can't risk any salt leeching out.

Are you sure it's driftwood from the ocean?

Theres always the chance it could still be contaminated.
