I can never find any driftwood for aquariums so I bought some cool lookin driftwood out of the reptile section. I've had it soaking, completely submerged, in a bucket for about 2 weeks and its still bouyant. What should I do.

Also, a disgusting brown sludge has formed and congealed at the surface and the water is pitch black.

Some reptile wood has coatings or stuff on it, some doesn't. And some isn't appropriate for tanks. Wood will eventually sink but it may take months.

I had some drift wood that took forever to sink, I had to put rocks on the bottom of it to hold it down.

Usually it takes a long time for it to sink, I've got some wood that's still floating and it's been in there for 3 months.

My driftwood finally started sinking on its own after 2 months... before that I just held it down with a rock :)
