I had a large bit that I couldn't get to stay down .. Siliconed some large pebbles[from the lfs] to the bottom . left for a day or two to let the silicone 'cure' ... It did the trick , the pebbles are buried in the gravel but it doesn't really matter if they show ,and the wood stays down.. pebbs
A long time ago, I found a really large beautifully shaped piece of wood. I knew I would have to pre-soak it not only to get it waterlogged, but to reduce the amount of tannins this piece would put out. So I took an old plastic cooler, filled it with hot water, put the log (that's basically what it was) in there and weighed it down with some cement blocks. I changed the water weekly but as time passed, it started to irk me that the log would pop up to the surface as soon as those blocks were removed. After several months, I decided I would simply weigh the thing down in my tank. I tied several large pieces of slate to it using fishing line and put it in the tank. Floated to the surface. Tried more pieces. The same thing happened. Then again added more slate, then piled the gravel and some other large rocks on top of the slate. Now it listed towards the top. Decided to let it sit this way for awhile. Didn't look too great with all the rocks and the log. Fish were freaked out for a day but then decided they liked it. I didn't. After 3 more months and the log still listing, I gave up and took it out. It made a nice accent in the front yard!
