Driftwood/bogwood Help

I was Kayaking in a saltwater river in Golant. I noticed some dead wood in the river by the edges. (Guessing this is driftwood). I asked the instructor about it and she said the river often erodes the sides and the wood and trees falls in. So the wood has been dead for a while. Anyway I don't really know if it's safe to use or not. Can someone help me? And where can you find bogwood? I have been out a few times by freshwater rivers to look for suitable wood but it's usually falling apart and rotten. I don't really know where to find a bog.

The only difference I am aware of between bogwood and driftwood is color... bogwood is brown and driftwood is grey.
