Dragon Flies

Well...I went to feed my fish this morning and there were 2 dragonflies quite happily sitting on the plants poking out of the water, looking quite at home. I have no idea if this is common or a problem - but I live in the center of London and probably only seen 1 or 2 dragon files here in the last few years!

They are cool, hope they hang around!

Excellent, so whas that 2 adults emerging from the pool?

Or two adults laying eggs/hunting?

TBH I have no idea! They are about 3cm long, so not huge at all.

They didn't appear to be mating, at least in the 5 mins I spent with them before work.

And a bit of googling - its probably a damsel fly not a dragon fly.

Ah cool quite possible at this time of year, so long as they are fairly narrow bodied, they are likely to be damsels

Is there any danger with these? I am guessing my dwarf puffers will consume any larvae rapid.

It all depends on species/size etc.

There are some voracious dragon fly larvae out there, most of them take 2-3 years to grow to a decent size (dependent on weather, food availability etc.).

The dwarf puffer is rather small, so could 'possibly' be at risk for established large larvae (though not damsel larvae).

The adult dragon flies pose no real threat and tend to target insects and/or insects trapped on the water surface.

OK cheers - if I see any sizable bugs they will be removed - not easy to spot with the amount of vegetation I have!

I had caught a small fly of some sort the other day and thru it in the tank (while still kind of alive) and my fish went crazy over it, he didnt last 5 seconds in there.

i have a tank with leaches and larvae in it, occasionally i give one to the fish as a treat (but not the leach for obvious reasons)
