Hi all, i am getting some donated gravel from my LFS tomorrow as they kindly agreed to let me have some, but where is best to put it to boost my filter? I have a 36" 108ltr tank with a fluval 205 external filter! ANy help? GRJ :good:

That's great you've got a helpful LFS! Gravel won't have as much beneficial bacteria as filter media, but it will have some. I've never actually tried this, but I'm thinking that to maximize the benefits of what IS in that gravel, I'd take your carbon bags out of the media tray in the filter canister and put the gravel where the carbon was. (Depending on the size of the slits on the media basket, you may have to put the gravel in to a stocking first.) Like I said, this is just a theory, so maybe somebody else can weigh in. Good luck!

Nah... just chuck it in as soon as possible, then stir it a bit - the filter will soon grab some Bacteria, if there IS any ! (you could ask then to squeeze a bit of filter juice into the bag too ? )

Filter Juice  Sounds goooood doesn't it

i agree with christine1014. put the gravel into a stocking. and place it iside the filter. there is bound to be some benifficial bacteria in the gravel and the filter will pick it up quick smart.

Ok, i have put the gravel in a stocking and put it into my filter. Its been there 4 days now and my ammonia has gone up and i have nitrite present, so something has worked as i do believe my tank is cycling. This means lots of work for me as i have fish in and i have to do loads of big water changes to make the ammonia and nitrite level managable. Thanks for all the advice!!! :shout: GRJ
