I took some photos of my new Dojo Loaches... I notices that compared to photos I've seen, mine are VERY light in color, and have a lot less marking... They aren't any different variety, just... Normal Dojo's... Not golden or anything. Is this because they are so young, or will they always be this light? Perhaps they were wrongly sold and aren't Dojo's at all... I love them no matter what they are, but I am curious ^^

I belive that you have a subspecies of dojo
Misgurnus anguillicaudatus fossilis as opposed to
the "std" dojo Misgurnus anguillicaudatus

Thanks ^^ That's probably it. As long as I can still call them Dojo's, because if I start calling them somethin' else, people are gonna wonder what happened to those Dojo's a wanted to badly... ^^

Anyhow, I took a few meore photos.

The bigger lighter one in the back I think is a female. I am basing this on absolutly nothing, so there is a high change of me being wrong ^___^

I've been trying to find some info on the subspecies Misgurnus anguillicaudatus fossilis and from the looks of it, they seem to have a lot of dark lines or spots... mine hardly have any coloration, just some very light blotchy spots. I'm guessing mine were just from a particularly light colored spawn, as I believe the 5 or 6 Dojo's I have are not wild caught, considering how similar all the ones in the tank were to eachother. I might ask next time I stroll in there, maybe tomarrow.

it could be a colour variation or it could be yet another,
as yet unclassified subspecies;
whatever it is great looking loach :thumbs:

i would go with a color variation...i see "gold" dojo loaches sold all the time and that would be my guess...they do look slightly thin, so i would feed them some live or frozen food for the first couple days until the rest of their body looks as big (or slightly bigger) than their head!

Right now they're eating freeze died shrimp, betta flakes, and some high quality tropical flakes. They've also been gnawing on the bulbs I have planted ^__^They're been eating a LOT. Because I'm still learning how much they eat, they've been getting more food than usual, because it's been 1 small feeding, see if they eat it all, another small feeding... And boy, do these guys EAT. The last feeding I did, which was about half an hour ago, they both decided to be top feeders and just float there engulfing the shrimp. Silly guys...

And they're not golden, nowhere near the same appearence. They're both a nice slate grey, though one looks a bit oranger than the other. One has absolutly no color right now. no gold tint, no blue tint... a solid grey.

yea they def. do know how to eat...mine sits up on a floating plant and top feeds all of the time ...guess you have to top feed if you want to beat the rainbowfish :rolleyes:

Its probably largly down to the fact that your substrate is very light coloured. I have noticed with my loaches and with those at work that they get darker/lighter depending what the general colouring of the tank is like. If they are in a planted setup with dennerlle dark gravel then they go very light. If however they are in a sand setup then they are alot lighter.

I have a dojo that looks just like yours. My other two are large and fat and have brown freckles. All three came from the same batch, and they all looked the same when i bought them. Like I said, two grew up to be darker and fatter, but one never changed at all. He grew in length (6 inches now), but he is light and very skinny. He isn't underfed, and eats just as much as the other two. I always thought maybe it was a different gender than the other two, and that's why there is such a size difference. Not sure though :dunno:

A random update - They now have names. The little boy is Chocolate Rice, the big girl is Dream with Whipped Cream. I named them this as a reminder as to what I was drinking when I named them. I think to avoid embarrasment on their part, I shall just call them Rice and Dream, and call my betta (Lemon Soda) just "The Betta'.
