I was wondering if I could use tiny amounts of dog worm tablets mixed with food to treat my Bolivian Ram for intestinal worms. If the answer is yes, how much of a tablet would I use?

I would say no, dont use wormers. You dont know if what they contain will actually kill the worms and may even kill the fish. Speak to a vet and see if theres an alternative.

It would definately kill the fish. The medication used kills all parasites - and I doubt it would distinguish a cold-blooded, water bound creature from a tape warm. Also, dewormers for cats and dogs are based on body weight. Cutting a pill in any size other than on a score mark negates the guarentee that you are getting the correct dosage of all chemicals in the pil.

Besides that, do you really think you could figure out how much a to give a one ounce fish when working with a pill for a 60 pound dog?

Never use animal meds except exactly as directed on the box, or by your vet!

What can I use? As far as I can see theres nothing I can use. My lfs doesn't have much in the way of meds

Sterazin by waterlife may help

Tryed dog and cat worming tablets and sad to say they don't work the only med that works and it hard to get hold of is levimsole, plus internal parasites do alot of damage to the insides of the fish and it usually sometimes to late even with the med.

hi
as said meds that work for a certain creature will not always work for another and may kill them.
for a start even if it was the right actual drug getting the dose right for a fish would be impossible to calculate or even estimate by cutting a tablet up. and it is highly unlikely that all or any of the ingreds in a dog worming tablet would be safe for a cold water creature.

swapping drugs around like that is dangerous to your pets and if you want an example: paracetamol(panadol) which is generally a very safe drug if taken in the correct does for humans is usually FATAL if given to a cat!

dont do it!!

Its getting serious now. My bolivian has a swollen anus with five red treads hanging from it (I persume these are worms). Hes in a community tank, so I was wondering if I have to treat the whole tank or put him in a hospital tank? I'm going to treat with Waterlife Sterazin.

Thanx Bloo. I've just ordered some wormer plus from aqua essentials. Hope he lasts though :-(
Aquaessentials is really quick and you'll have it by Saturday morning I'm sure.

If you need to be sure, just mention it's urgent and send Richard a pm (his username here is Aquaessentials).
But no doubt you'll have it asap.

Best of luck !

Have you asked for this to be pinned yet Bloo. Its really worth knowing

Nope not yet :)
I'll stick in the "pin me" section and perhaps they can add it in somewhere or something.

So many people in the UK don't know what to do with internal parasites - and if (like me) you can't get levimasole (unless prescribed by the vet at furious cost), and Strazin doesn't help in many cases either - this really is the best / safest option !

And now that I know how "safe" it is to use - and even though I'm against medicating just in case - I'll probably now always dose after introducing wild caught fish (most catfish and many loaches) :good:
