okay i was fishless cycling until i hit a point where my water just stopped cycling. So i decided to change my water (75%) to get rid of the nitrite (.5ppm) and ammonia (5.0 ppm) so i could start a fish cycle. When i got done with the water change i tested my water and the ammonia was at 2.0ppm and nitrite went up to 2.0-5.0ppm(cant really tell). How does this happen. Makes no sense, any one know?

What method are you using for your fishless cycle?

When I did my fishless cycle, I just added some ammonia in the middle of it. It took about 30 days which is average for a cycle. No water change either. The levels will sort themselves out.

I'm in the process of cycling a 125 gal freshwater tank. You may have added too much ammonia. Too much ammonia will inhibit the cycling process (so I've read). You should decrease the amount of ammonia once you start getting a nitrite reading. I've just started my cycling (day 7) I'm getting a nitrite of .25ppm my ammonia is still around 4ppm. I haven't added anymore ammonia since day 1. I will add more once I'm confident that it's dropping and my nitrite is rising daily.

Yup, your adding a lot of ammonia every day, so you're likely to keep seeing high numbers. I go with however much ammonia it takes to get the level up to 5 ppm, and then add this amount daily. Once nitrite becomes measurable I cut it down to half this amount and continue until the cycle is complete.

I don't know how much 4 tbsp is in relevence to your tank, but cutting it in half would probably be a good idea at this point.

I did cut it in half when i was doing it, i even stopped dosing it for 2 weeks and the readings didnt change even with gravel from an established tank. Did u guys read i changed almost all the water therefore im not doing the cyle anymore. And you havent answered my question if this is even possible.

almost full water changes rob tanks of the beneficial bacteria that break down Nitrites, Nitrates, and ammonia. Maybe you could "feed your tank. I added catfish pellets to get some waste in their and it seemed to help. I also added Danios

Test kit is brand new, you guys dont get it i changed 75% of the water an the nitrites went UP!!!!! Isnt this imposssible?

Ok let me explain something to you. When going through the cycle beneficial bacteria build up. These bacteria Remove ammonia and nitrite to convert it to other chemicals. These Bacteria get in the water. When you change the water You take out all those bacteria so You are basically Restarting or Setting back the cycle. It could take almost a month for you to get rid of All your Nitrite. I would cut out adding ammonia and Add either some Cycle fish or Just add food to the tank. Adding ammonia would make the ammonia spike last longer. You need to have bacteria break down the ammonia for it to be converted to Nitrite. Stop adding ammonia and your cycle should finish itself up if you Add food or cycle fish. Pick out the hardiest fish u will eventually want and add it or them. This should move the cycle along. Hope i helped.

Okay i want balas so could i get 3 of them, are they hardy or clown loaches?

Okay so i scewed up the cycle by changing 75% of the water? But if thats so i dont see why my nitrites would go from .5 to 2 because of taking out water.

Also wntthe fish die right away no mater what it is in 2.0 nitrie and 5.0 ammonia conditions?
