i have taken a piece of garden hose about 10cm long and made small holes about 3/4 of the way up it. i the put an iarstone at the bottom of the holes, inside the hose and connected it to the air pump. i then surrounded the hose in filter sponge. does this sound like it will work?

It should work if the sponge is an open cell type. It needs to be a filter sponge rather than a common cleaning sponge. Cleaning sponges have a closed cell structure and water won't pass through them very easily.

nose? do you mean the bottom of the hose where the airstone is? if it is then it is not plugged, the bottom of the airstone if level with the bottom of the hose

yeah, hose, sorry. its 3am and im still up. lol

you should plug the bottom of the hose. that way the suction comes through the drilled holes.

idk. ive never used a garden hose before. all my sponge filters are pvc. and theyre glued to tile or slate, so one side is always blocked off
