Hi All

I have just purchased a Woha Jamari fish tank.

Its 100 x 50 x 40cm and comes with Woha stand.

More info can be seen at http://www.woha-aquarien.de/

I have just filled with gravel and water but forgot to put a base between tank and stand.

I have been advised it has a floating base but has hoping someone could confirm this.

Thanks for any input.

Regards Mark

H Mark and welcome to the forums,

I have looked at the site and it doesn't give enough detail to tell one way or the other. You can't see the tank base in the pictures for your model specifically. One bad sign is that in the pictures of the aquariums that perhaps are being sold separate from the stands, the aquariums (quite nice looking by the way) seem to -not- have floating bases.

You can tell pretty easily yourself whether a base is floating or not I believe. Floating simply means the weight is resting on a frame edge that goes around the perimeter of the tank. If the frame edge is the only thing that touches the supporting surface of the stand/furniture/shelf then the tank bottom will -not- be touching and the definition will be floating. If it is NOT a floating base then the entire bottom sheet of glass will touch the supporting surface. It is only this situation, where the entire sheet is touching that needs to have a sheet of closed-cell foam under it to offset any irregularities (like bits of sand or whatever) that might get in there and be a "bump" under the glass sheet. The tremendous filled weight can create lines of stress from even a small irregularity, thus the need for the (not too thick!) padding. You basically want to remove the effect of any irregularities but you don't want to create enough "height" to cause swaying of the great weight.

Hope that helps!

Many thanks for the detailed response.

I have put a polystyrene base down but it does seem like the outer upright glass touches the stand before the bottom piece of glass.

Would it be bad news to use a polystyrene base on a floating tank ??

Yes it would, if it is thick enough to put pressure on the bottom glass.

Is there anyway to see if its floating or not by looking at the tank ?

when you put the tank onto the stand does the base of the tank sit flat on top of the tank or is there a rim around the edge of the tank so the base is raised up from the stand

got gf to take pics as i wont be home until 5

what do you think ?

Need to see it from the bottom. Put a straight edge across the bottom with the tank upside down. A floating base design will have a gap, about 1/4" or so. With a traditional design the straight edge will touch the bottom glass.

don't believe there is a gap but will check tonight for sure.

will give an update later.

thanks mark.

The bottom base is located inside the upright panels.

However there doesn't appear to be a gap between the uprights and the base.

Any ideas ?
