Looks like some sort of ancient non-return valve. (stop-check)

used on airstones when the air pump is lower than the tank to prevent a syphon forming if the pump fails thereby draining the tank onto the floor.

where did it come from? Is the little silver thing beside it part of it? It kinda looks like it is some aquarium tubing with a strange stop check valve on it to prevent backflow. What are the dimensions. In other words how thick is the tubing. the tuft of foam on the end might be some sort of filter.

yeah your right. I'm used to the long strips of airstone but I have seen airstones like that before now that I think of it.

That's the normal shape for a standard airstone in the UK!

It's probably a non return valve or could it be some sort of inline medication doseing device which would be attached to an airpump and chemicals or otherwise administered via an airstone. It's only a guess as the picture is quite far away.

im not takling abot the air stone im talking about the big thing in the center im reall confuse

I think we've decided its a non-return valve. All it does is stop water coming from the tank into the air pump.

From my medical days, that looks an awful lot like the drip chamber of a tube-feeding set up, like when a person is receiving nourishment through a tube inserted into the stomach. Or could be IV tubing. The greenish-blue tint to it makes me think tube-feeding though. Blue food coloring is added so that it's easy to spot if it's going somewhere it shouldn't (blue isn't exactly the color of ay human body fluids!). As to why it's connect to an airstone, I couldn't say...

Lol...

Anyway, the thing in the middle is a non-return check valve like everyone's been saying :p It's a good thing to have in case the pump stops working as sometimes the water from your tank can be sucked up to the pump which obviously can cause all sorts of problems - like electrocution if you're unlucky. The valve stops the back-flow so the water stays in your tank and never gets close to the electrical stuff :).
