i'm looking for a pic of a baby oscar, one under 3". a local store has very small oscars and i want to get one. but they look somewhat different than the adult ones i've seen. i would like to see a pic to make sure the store is in fact selling oscars and not some mystery fish.

this store is not my usual store i just went there recently. it seems clean no dead fish and it has a maintance schedule posted, delivery schedule posted, and specific times listed to tell customers when new stock will be sold and such. the people i have talked to there don't seem extermenly knowledgable but i've been told the owner/manager is very knowlegable in the art of fish keeping. the staff follow the instructions to the letter and it seems to be working so i'll give it a try.

i just want to be informed on what a baby oscar looks like so there are no suprises in a few months when the fish grows into something else other than an oscar.

thanks

Oscars are pretty easy to spot although there are a couple different color variations. Don't expect an adult oscar to look like a baby one either, the babies generally have brighter colors that dull somewhat as the oscar matures.

the color is much lighter than adult and the markings are kindof a light greyish color. they are much smaller than i've ever seen in a fish store the smallest being 1/2" and the majority of them being 1.5"

Here's my Aristotle as a little 2" baby:

If you want an adult with nice colours, buy a baby with highly contrasting ones

Here's my lil fella when he was 2-3"

thanks guys, i'm going to go to the store again today and make my final decision. if i get one he'll start in a 55 gal and move to a tank over 100 gl in a few months.

Me? 210g

sounds like a good plan Rayne, just be sure with yourself that you can get the 100gal in literally a few months as thats how long it will take him to outgrow your 55.

my guy is coming up to a year old now, but he's been that kind of size for about 3-4 months now.

mine hit 6" after about 2-3 months

i already have the 100 gal (approx) tank it just won't be set up for a few months until i move in to my new place. i don't want to set it up and have to break it down again to move it if i can wait.

another question? do any of you have any other fish in the tank with your oscars? did you get any other fish with the oscars when they were small so they grew up together? can i put a jack dempsey or two in with an oscar?

thanks

i'm not sure about JD's but mines in a big community- bichirs, rays, sevrums, catfish, arowana, eels to name a few tank mates.

in a 100 your limited a bit more though as the size of the fish you need to live with the oscar is going to cause a quite a bit of extra waste.
