Does anyone actaully have a recovery tank?

I do the same as Tolak, i have a selection of empty tanks up to 55g and spare filters running in my operational tanks. If a fish needs to be removed or a new fish needs quarentining then i can have a tank set up for them within a the time it takes to fill it.

YES!! I have:
3 one gallon isolation/medication/hospital tanks (obviously only for small fish)
2 ten gallons for same reason

EDIT: I also have a 5 gallon for the livebearers birthing ward and nursery. Soon to be upgraded to a 10 or a 15 ish!

would a 5 gal be large enough.....the largest fish i have ever gotten was a shubukin goldfish and i usauly only buy 1 or two fish at a time....no more than 3 at the most

Well, fish keeper, a five usg will keep about five 1 inch fish. It's a start. You may find it doesn't always meet your need and may want to add another later. Be sure to have a filter or media that can be ready to go into an empty tank so that it is cycled.

One of the most important things I have confirmed on the forum is to ALWAYS quarantine new fish about 3 weeks. And have learned how to have an extra tank and cycled filter ready to go.

Your concern shows a true hobbist's attitude. :)

i was just wondering becuase on a stupid impulse buy my goldfish have ick and i have already lost one :-( and strangely after just 2 doeses its already gone(already got help with this so you dont need to help) so i want to prevent this from happening again....aside from going into stores with money :*).....about the extra tank from what i gather u can just keep the filter running in an established tank untill needed and you can just keep everything stored out of the way untill needed

I have a 10 gallon and a 5 gallon that get used as hospital / quarantine tanks. I learnt about Quarantine the hard way when 6 diamond tetras brought ich and a bacterial infection into my biggest tank and wiped it out in one week flat.

Now I ALWAYS quarantine, and if a fish looks ill it gets pulled out and put on it's own. Not just so I can treat it easier, but to save the rest of the tank too.

I just keep a couple of small filters running in my larger tanks, then if I need a QT tank I pull out a ready cycled filter and I'm ready to go.

I was thinking what do you do with the filter after your done quarentining or medicating? How do you steralize it properly? I was thinking boiling water but then I thought that that would damage/melt stuff. Then maybe some kind of soap or bleach but wouldn't that maybe leach into the plastic? or the soap would get in somewhere and even though you rinse rinse rinse it manages to stay there..then you stick it back in the main tank (as an extra filter of course) and soap gets in your tank or something? :/

I wash them in a bucket with a shot of bleach added to the water, then rinse in a bucket of fresh water with double the dechlorinator. They go back into a tank to cycle after that. Never had a problem.
