does 0.25ppm nitrite indicates nitrosomonas are growing?

just tested nitrite and the color is a bluish-purple....almost around 0.25ppm.

does this suggest the bacteria eating ammonia are proliferating and producing waste which subsequently turns into nitrites?

Yes. If the nitrite levels are that low, you are close to having a cycled tank.

i'm not so sure about this.

in short, 13 weeks into this cycling, been through both ammonia/nitrite spikes, white spot diseases, high temps, salt, chemicals, many WCs, and tests, and now at this 2nd stage. hopefully it'll be right this time.

current reading:

0.75ppm ammonia
0.25ppm nitrite
5-10ppm nitrate
ph 7.8
temp 77F

How big is the tank? What is in the tank right now?

40 gallons
4 baby goldfish

i think the main setback was some of my fish had white spot disease early in the cycling process which i had to treat asap. and in treating, i was cleaning the substrate, tank wall, decor, rocks to rid the ich eggs. additionally, i made some newbie mistakes by cleaning out the filter/media with tap water. a few lessons learned...

now all fish seems OK, cycle (or re-cycle) can continue again.

Hopefully this cycle will go better... rinsing the media in tap water was probably what set you back the most. Lesson learned. :)

should i expect in the next few week ammonia to drop to zero or near 0, and nitrite spike?
