Do you use any protection while maintaining tanks?

i use the no spill clean and fill and usually wash my hands afterwards. I dont have to siphon by mouth anymore. If i am eating after i clean the tank I will definatly wash them, but sometimes I just wipe my hands off.

I don't always wash my hands before the tanks, because they dont usually have lotion on. I wash my hands after if I'm going to eat.

I've got dirty water from the siphon in my mouth twice, but it hasn't happened in a while so I'll keep starting the siphon that way. I'm thinking I should disinfect it (ie boil it) from time to time.

Does anyone use a siphon-starter bulb? I've heard these don't work very well.

I also thought this thread was about something else, but then I realised that it would be in the wrong section (if it was what I thought it was about, it should be in the General Talk section) and seeing as Ken's a mod, he would know enough not to post in the wrong section. :p

wow I had no idea about that stuff...............................................now I will think twice........................yowsers.

I only where gloves if I have badages or open cuts on as it may contaminate.

What kind of syphons are you guys using?! I just put my finger over one end, hold the other up, then slowly take my finger off. The pressure "sucks" the water up by itself. :D

I don't wear gloves or anything and I'm a freak about washing my hands before, during and after. At least 200 times....maybe more.

That list was very interesting,Ken. I have a friend who works in a lfs and deals with many, many tanks, salt included. She's always sick and just the other day I mentioned that it could be something from the tanks -_- I know she's been stung by things several times.

I use a python, but not the battery-operated one or whatever it is that everyone loves. Mine is the kind you need to suck the end to start the siphon.

With your siphon , you stick it in the water, and then cover the end that isn't in the water with your finger and slowly remove your finger?

Submerge the syphon so the pipe is full of water, then let one end down into the bucket. It takes practice but works.

No.

but If have cuts, I don't put them into tank or I wear gloves. However, I have been thinking to buy overvoltage protector ;)

My hands are pretty much the only thing that comes into contact with tank water. Usually I just wash my hands after they've been in the tank. If I have cuts I avoid putting them into the water.

Heh, I've worked in a TB lab so I knew about M. marinum. The first thing the people there said when they heard I keep tropical fish, was to warn me about that possibility.
