Do You Think There Are Pet Stores That...

I almost hate to admit it, but I often go to Meijer (large multi purpose superstore like WalMart) on tuesday as that is the day their livestock comes in and as such usually the only day they look healthy. The fish are horribly kept there, but their prices are good.

Well there is never anattendent in the area, and saving one time I have always netted, bagged, and priced my own fish.

I prefer it that way a lot as the workers are even more incompetent than normal pet stores

I've done that before in the past
I've also moved fish myself when they were paired with the wrong tankmates (like green spotted puffers and African clawed frogs )

I've done it myself a few times, but I'd much rather point out the ones I want and let someone else do the work. I'd be terribly embarrassed if I accidentally injured one of their fish, and since many of their tanks are higher than I feel comfortable working with, I'm happy to wait for service.

Remember that you don't have to buy anything that you don't want. If you don't like the ones the sales person picks out, ask him/her (nicely) to put them back and get another. You are the customer, after all. :D

I always pick which fish I want and then let the person working there catch them. If they catch the wrong one, it gets put back and they keep at it until they catch the one I want. The only time I've ever said "just grab me a half dozen" was with my pygmy corys. I've only had one guy get annoyed with me and I simply told him to get someone else to catch them if it was to much effort for him. I'm paying for them, I pick them out. Angels aren't "feeders" - they shouldn't have a problem with you telling them which ones you want. If they do - shop somewhere else.

They would not be covered by their insurance policy if they let you do this.

I understand a number of wholesalers will allow retailers to pick from their tanks but that is a little different. I don't know of many lfs, if any that will allow you round here unless you know the proprietor very well.

If a customer wants specific fish then I'm quite happy to pick out the ones they want, I haven't been asked in the fish house if they could cacth there own fish, and we don't let any customers do it.

It gets annoying in the pond season when people want to catch there own goldfish or thinkit's self serve . Picking out individual colours of goldfish variations is pretty pointless and annoying IMO.

Yeah because you only see the top and sometimes the side of the fish.
