I also think it would be quite beneficial - I assume it would act as a quick answer to many peoples problems with algae.

If created I think it'd need to have some FAQs in though so that we could refer anyone with an algae problem to it and hopefully they'd learn some other things in the process of fixing their own problem :D

But yes, I think it'd be good! :D

We already have an algae guide it's here. www.theplantedtank.co.uk
From experiance its the best on the net, there are tips that are not there but the advice that is there is very very good.

I agree with Garuf.

We would end up having a section for CO2 and a section for light and a section for fertilisers. It would end up being an endless section of sub-forums which as we all know people ignore and just ask the question anyway.

No, I don't think a separate algae section is needed, however, with the skill at which some of your grow the stuff, I sometimes wonder...

I am, however, considering expanding on George Farmer's algae guide in the pinned section. Something along the lines of a pinned article with photos of each major algae, their growth habits, causes, and suggested treatments. I ultimately believe that algae should be resolved by restoring balance to the system, but I understand the need for TFF to have its own algae guide.

I will look into this in the near future actually, as I'll be off for Spring Break next week and my only task is to maintain my tanks, learn a tiny opera roll, and clean up some things here. The following week, I'll be stuck in a little FL town singing same opera role with nothing to do in the mornings and afternoons except play around here. So, hopefully, some things will be expanded and cleaned up.

I'm glad you set up the poll, though, for all our interest in growing plants, sometimes, some of us are more interested in algae.

I kind of agree with both sides, as there seem to be increasing numbers of people from other areas of FF.net who are just coming on here to ask about algae. I think with kit fishtanks having T5 lighting of good levels will lead to more and more of this kind of problem.

No need. This isnt a all plant site. Adding a algae section would just cost money and 3/4 of the people in this forum don't even do planted tanks.

Planted or not you still get algae! I asked this in plantted section as this is where algae questions are asked so i thought it would be the most relevant section to do the poll.

i am aware this is an old topic, but its a very good idea.. :good:

no its not. im soory. just updating the existing guide by GF.

the best way to get rid of algae is address why it is there in the first place, not shove a load of algae eaters and easy carbo to paint over the problem.

exactly, if there was a small section on algae for marines.. a section for fw algae then divided up into little pinned topics each beginner would know where to stand

i never say anything about shoving algae eaters or easycarbo in and i am sure you will agree i always offer the advice of the root cause. I may suggest using EC to get rid of it but never as a long term fix.
It is ok having an algae guide saying yes, take a look at this, but most people follow the advice on there and still find problems. Nearly every tank needs a bit of tweaking to get it right, which is why i suggested ia sub-forum. Also, not many people are aware of the gguides out there, and most people dont read the pinned topics anyay.

But i wouldnt go as far as a sub-forum for FW & SW.

Yes but CO2, lighting & ferts all come under planted tanks. Algae covers a larger area - planted tanks, "normal" or marines.

Although i agree the current pinned topic by George needs updating.

Thanks
