Do You Own A Boring Fish.

cardinal tetra, they are boring, but they have good colors. betta are kinda boring, since they just sit around. i still have to take care of them even if they are boring, doesnt make them less of a fish

Bettas are way more intersting if you have plakats or an all female set-up as they are much more active. I think all betta are more intersting than any other fish I've owned so I'm also very biased. :D

Will everyone stop being mean to tetras?!

My neons (yes, I know...) are wonderful! There's ten of them and although they shoal losely they are very active and inquistive. The 2 honey gouramis are gorgeous and always diving to the top, to shrmp have conferences (goodness knows what thats about) and the tiny ickle pygmy corys try to do everything at once - including swimmin against the current, which for something currently 1cm long is quite a challenge!

Most boring FW is the cherry barbs. Rarely come out.

Most boring BW - there are none! They do hide but 'peek' at you the whole time and turn their heads (well, as much as fish can!) to watch you go by!
:D

Well what we mean is most tetras are extremly boring you just haven't seen my tetras they hide in the back of the tank only come out in the open when being fed but go back to hiding.

Plecs have to be the most boring fish in the world, they hide all day, rarely move at night and dont even provide any entertainment at feeding time, might as well put a couple of pretty rocks in the tank because at least you dont have to check if theyre alive still every few weeks.

ah I love my Pleco. He goes crazy when I put zuchini in the tank and floats upside down sucking on it. And every once in a while he gets an evil streak and chases my Oscar around. I love my Oscar and should feel bad for him, but it is a hilarious sight seeing them streaking around a ten inch Oscar with a foot long pleco on his tail making the sucky face.

hmm well, i have only got glowlight tetras and black phantoms in my tank at the mo'.. and all but one (black phantom) are continually darting around chasing eachother (when the lights are on) great fun to watch the balck phantoms play fight too :) so i guess i'm lucky to have fun tetras, all but one, hehe.

My Amano shrimp will qualify - I hardly get to see them :) When I can spot them, they are always interesting and upto some cute activities.

I will have to disagree on that one CFC. my pleco is great he is out and about all the time, and always up to something, never a dull moment especially when he is munching an algae wafer.

my pleco does that too, its so funny watching it, its like he is in heaven

...my male bristlenose consistently chases my pufferfish off the algae wafers. he's not hanging and sucking, but that bn isn't afraid to give puffer a good head-butting.

Boring fish, hmmm. You know, I haven't met one that qualified as boring yet.

The still behavior that people see in tetras is a instinctual predator eluding tactic. Another tactic they use besides this and schooling is the fin flicking. Not only is it used as a display, it also breaks its line to a potential predator, making it a harder target to pinpoint. I think it is fascinating behavior, and it is really interesting watching a school of 24 cardinals remain still together. That takes some serious communication that we can't even perceive. It's pretty cool that they can also maintain that kind of control in the water. We look like dingledorfs in water, while they can be absolutely still. I imagine, we probably look like giant predators to them.

I wouldn't say my bettas are boring either. But I keep all my bettas in situations where they can see another male. That brings out more interesting behavior, I think.

I haven't found Plecos to be boring either. But I really haven't kept many, preferring the shoaling otos. My favorite one was a little clown pleco I had in my 45g with the cardinals. He loved to chew on wood, but he only came out at night. I think the new fixture I'm getting has an option to have moonlights, which seems like a neat prospect to see some nocturnal behavior. Especially from kuhlie loaches if I plan on keeping them in my new 36g.

For me keeping fish is a soothing hobby. It's their boringness that I find so appealing really. It's relaxing to watch them. They lower blood pressure, my goldfish were really good at that. I'm sure I'll discover a boring fish eventually.

Right, so far it seems like "boring" takes one of two forms:

either, schooling fish, not moving a lot or showing a lot of individuality (=tetras)

or, being nocturnal
Right, thats why we need all the weird, wacky and obsessive people in the world. Like us fish people for example. :p

Probably the common pleco in our 55. He loves his cave and prefers to come out only at night. We've got a rubberlipped plec that's really fun to watch. He chases the cories if they come near his throne (an greek Acropolis arch figure)
