Do any of the forum members keep Killifish. If so what species do you keep.

I currently keep a pair of Fp. gardneri 'Lokoja' and a pari of N. guentheri. I had for a short time a pair of A. australe orange (I still have the female) and a pair of S. boitonei, both of which I hope to aquire another pair of in the near future. Have to say, Nothobrachius and Simpsonichthys are my favorites.

I haven't ever REALY kept killies. From time to time I get american-flag fish but realy, that's it. I have kept some other species in the past but it was always on a temporary basis (bred some for a friend and then gave him the fish and similar circumstances).

You know from my post not long ago that I have 2 pairs of Aphyosemion australe.

I've never had them but also like the Fundulopanchax gardneri.

Last year during the summer I thought of getting rid of my discus because the second bedroom gets so hot with the tank water at 83 degrees and the computer. This year so far has been cooler then normal. If I get tired of the heat in the second bedroom the discus might go and I will get some Fundulopanchax gardneri and concentrate on killies.

I had in the past some Micropanchax macrophthalmus macrophthalmus lampeye panchax a.k.a. normans killiefish or normans blue eye killiefish.
A stunning little fish that is very sensative to water params and not really suited to the beginner; that was my mistake.

Thanks for the replies so far guys, just curious as to how many members are keeping Killifish. Is it because you think they are difficult to keep or is it down to availability.

Cmon they're must be more in the forum..

my brother just got two of those golden Panchax's today. they are quite nice looking.

I have a pair of Fundulupanchax Gardneri :D Makurdi strain i think but im not entirely sure! I had to wait over 6 months to get them as they're almost impossible to find here!

i have 4 american flagfish, 3 females and one male.

I must say they seem pretty hardy and are truely my favorite addition to my 20 gallon. They are always active and good algea eaters!

BigC, I think the reason so few members here keep them is they are not a fish commonly carried in lfs. Finding breeders in the area isn't always easy. I only got into it by looking for local fish clubs, saw a killi club, said "What's a killifish?", did some research and was hooked. I've had to get all of mine via Aquabid. The only ones I've seen in stores are the Golden Wonder variety. Since they are not as common in general, not as many people keep them or are even aware of them.

Availability. No where near me sells them, I'd either have to pay a fortune for eggs on Ebay or get some off Trimar. I have the emails of some people who sell them, but I don't have any tanks spare. I'd like a pair of a. australe gold, and if I have plenty of spare cash and lots of tanks to fill, I'll get some in with an order off Trimar.

This is my pair:

Im thinking of moving them to their own tank very soon to try and breed them so if anyone is interested in buying any in the future PM me! :D Im not going to breed them unless enough people want any though as its waste of time and money!

Another problem might be the myth of a short life span.
Many killifish will out live guppies.

actually there are many annual killies that only live for a year,
but why that should stop you, me or anyone else keeping them :dunno:

If you google killifish association there are loads of sites, there may even be one near you.
