Is it my imagination or do my fish recognise me,do they have feelings like dogs and cats.Whenever i go near my tank they come straight to the front of the glass and watch me.
Also when i do a water change they dont seem afraid,i have to literally move my scoop around them so they dont get scooped. Also the Gouramis let me even touch them, its really freaking me out.Im thinking about getting some of my wifes hoop earrings and traning them to swim through hoops, then i can take them on the road(joke) :) . Does anyone else experience this phenomenon .

My Rosy Barbs all get excited when I come over... but I think it's just because they want food! If I pull out the food container, they see it and I'll slowly raise it up from the bottom to the top of the tank, and they will all follow it! LOL!

I do think they get used to the sight and scent of their keeper. My bettas act differently when it's me in or around the tank than they do for others. They also have a tendancy to be underhand whenever I'm doing something. :) My snails will just crawl right only my hand when I'm cleaning. The black kuhlis, well, they're not afraid of anything!

All my fish are frightened of me for some reason, when I walk over close to the tank they all run ( I mean swim) away from me. then they calm down, unless i make a quick movement.

My harlequins like to bite me when I'm making a water change.

I have ungrateful fish...

YES! I swear my platies know me... and they know stuff too. Like, whenever I open the lid (either to feed them or do water changes, or whatever), they rush to the top thinking it's food. They KNOW, I swear... LOL.

Oh all my fish do that, I believe most people's do (hate to break it to you) Its just usually when the lid opens food goes in the water. Fish then associate a lid that is up with the giving of food.

if i put my hand in the tank the guppies all come for me! generally, all my fish follow people when they walk past the tank...and they follow the cats!

Ian sometimes teases our Oscar, he gets so excited when you pick up his food packet sometimes Ian will walk past and wave it infront of the tank so he gets all excited! how mean.

but yeah I reckon they all recognise me, some of them will come and nibble your hand when your doing maintenance, some are much more shy.

Yeah I agree with paul, they love the food you give them. My mollies bite me when I clean the tank! They actually sometimes pull hairs out! They are tropical versions of the cleaner wrass!

I think fish are brighter than people give them credit. I've only had my tank running for a couple of months and they already know when it's dinner time.
In particular, I find the salt and pepper mollies the best at knowing. They are greedy beggars too. As soon as the food goes in they go crazy.

It's true that they probably won't feel affection towards you, but they may recognize you and your purpose - food! :hey:

Its a Pavlovian response, someone in front of the glass means food, more so if you open the lid.
