I've got my new tank with 5 neons and 3 platies (1 male, 2 females) and was wondering if i really NEED to add some big plants in there yet? Ive already got 3 plants but they are only small so don't really give any cover or much for any fish to hide in.

What size Tank ??

Are you talking real or fake plants ??

If real what kind do you have now ??

What kind of lighting do you have ??

we need some more info in order to best help you :/

I've got a 63 liter tank. I have regular tube lighting (nothing fancy)

I'm talking about real plants but i have no idea what type i have right now. Some small grass like plant which is only like 3-4cm long right now. A red thin taller plant (Alternanthera sessillis) and the most recent plant was just a smallish green plant with bigger leaves than the others its around 3-4 inches long. Sorry i've probably been no help at all.

Your info was great !!

since you have smaller fish I would say try Java Moss...those fish will love it and it is a very easy plant to have and grow ( you can even sell your clippings )

JAVA MOSS

it will grow on anything and is nice and lush...keep it towards the front of your tank for the best effect...

you a small stone to hold it down if it floats ( take it out of the pot ) and it will root itself

you will have to trim it from time to time...

Hope that helps

if you need anything else feel free to Pm me or post again !!

There are alot of plants that grow in low light, like GreyLegion has suggested.

Java Fern would also be fine, because it does not cope so well with bright light, and it has broadleaves, and it grows quickly too.

Just remeber, Java Moss AND Java Fern! :D

keep an eye on the red one. it will die unless you have strong lighting. when you see signs of rotting leaves either dump it or upgrade your lights (2.5WPG Min.)

as to other plants, Anubias Nana is another good low light plant to add to the Java's.

sorry to bear bad news but red plants are the most demanding of the lot.
