Do I Need Heater

bought a small tank for my daughter today,it measures 200mm long x 230mm wide x 250mm height and holds 11.5 litres,is has filter and light but no heater,can i add cherry shrimp and a few Mosquito Rasbora to it without a heater or do i need one,if i need a heater where would i get one small enough for it,and how many shrimp and Mosquito Rasbora could i add to it.

I would imagine they would do better with a heater, if the light doesn't heat up the tank (incandescent lights can get REALLY hot on small tanks). A heater you might want to look into is the "Marineland Heater Shatterproof Mini 10 Watt". It is set to 78F(25C). I am pleased with how it does on my 2 gallon. I'm guessing you don't live in the USA though so I can't give you a local supplier or anything, you'll have to look around.

Hydor do an amazing tiny heater. Idk where you are, but I know that Big Als Aquarium (google it, they're a chain store across the United States and Canada) offer them on their website.

This heater is small enough that it can be placed UNDER your substrate. I -love- the hydor line of heaters.

Scott, I don't want to put a dampener on things, but aren't you concerned about the tank being too small for Boraras brigittae? Going on the Seriously Fish profile, which is not always correct (eg. they quote Splash Tetras reaching just 4cm rather than the normal ~9cm)...

Must admit I'm stumped in coming up with a suggestion that might work as an alternative, a "nano" fish that is colourful and yet relatively inactive...

What about galaxy rasboras? I've never kept them but they seem to be the "go to" fish for small tanks.

Galaxy Rasbora's are ok if they are captive bred. However, they're pretty endangered so please don't buy any wild caught fish. I'm pretty sure they're on the endangered species list.

There are webpages that state that one galaxy rasbora would be okay for 9 litres plus. However, it's a bit on the limit for me.

Aquael do nice slim heater which are great for small tanks and they're cheap too
