No offense taken to any of the comments as you raise valid points We we're planning on only having 1 Betta in our 10, but I know what you mean in that you are still rolling the dice with an animals life.

Miles, I'd agree with the filter choice, I have an AC50 on my 36 gallon tank and it works well, is easy to clean, has great options for media, and it is essentially silent.

OK, I've had a look around and Aquaclear do not seem to be available in the UK (any ideas where to get them??). They are made by Hagen who appear to be Fluval in the UK. Fluval make a range of submerged filters - the most applicable appears to be the "2 plus" which has two spong sections but I don't think it can take bio media. The U2 can certainly take bio media however it is rated for tanks 45L - 110L which I fear will be far to stong for my 20l tank...

Any comments on this filter or UK alternatives?

One interesting comment made in passing somewhere was the that UK market appears to favour submerged rather than HOB and HOB may interfeer with braces etc on tanks (though on a 5 USG tank I wouldn't have though there'd be that much in the way of bracing but I might have to worry about a condensation cover?)...

Any thoughs on Submerged vs HOB?
