To cut a long story short... LFS has a tank labelled "Sucking Catfish". Originally, I bought 1. Guy told me it was an Oto. So, today I went and bought another 2, again labelled "sucking catfish", so he had some tankmates.
Only now that I've got them home and had a good look, I noticed they are much lighter in colour than the 1st one I bought, and have yellow eyes. The original guy doesn't have yellow eyes. But now after some more research, I think he is a CAE as well.
I'm not really good with photos, but hopefully these give the idea. Can anyone confirm for me if these are indeed CAEs?

Here is a pic of the 2 I bought today:

Sorry to say those look like CAEs to me.They are often sold as sucking loaches and if you have 3 in your tank you will most likely have big problems ahead so Id take them back.
Ive never seen an oto so probably someone else will be able to explain the differences
I do know that my lfs has caes and they are various shades and different markings but they are all caes :/

They are CAE (Gyrinocheilus Aymonieri) not Otto's.

These are a couple of photos of my ottos that I got yesterday:

In the UK they are sold as "sucking loaches" and are usually in coldwater and tropical tanks (Ive always seen them in both) but They are pretty aggressive from what Ive always been told and have seen them chasing the slower fancy goldfish.

I would definately say they are CAE. I had some years ago. They were OK when they were small but, they grew and terrorized the tank, killing several fish. They will become agressive and territorial, soon. I personally wouldn't have one. The CAEs I had quit eating alge when they got older, and, as I said, became agressive and killed other fish. They will definately fight among themselves in your tank, they are very territorial IME.

I've been wanting some otos for my community tank, but gee, the photos of the CAEs and otos look the same to me. How can you tell them apart?

The CAE's (which is what you've got) have more of a zigzag pattern than otos. My experience of the species was very similar to Bryan's. Unfortunately several different species are sold under the name sucking loach (inclduing the common plec), which makes life complicated.

Booboo puppy, when you actually see an Otto they look nothing like a CAE. If you do a google image search for "Ottocinclus" you will see the difference. My photos arent to clear but beleive me if you see them you wont confuse them with CAEs. Ottos are a lot flatter in shape the CAEs are more cylindrical, common Ottos are mainly black and white in colour the CAEs are mostly brown.

Thanks for the help everyone. I am going to take the 2 new ones back to the LFS, and probably suggest to them that they label their tanks properly.
I think the problem is that firstly, I was told they are otos. And secondly, I haven't seen a live oto so I couldn't tell the difference.
They sure do look similar in photos I have seen. Not so much the 2 new ones, but certainly the original guy as he is quite dark coloured and you can hardly see his zig zag pattern.
These new guys are already fairly aggressive, they have been chasing my poor rummynoses all over the tank, and have tried to sucker on to my gouramis (luckily the gouramis can shake them off pretty easily since they are small). So they definately can't stay.
