Do Common Ramshorn Snails Work As Well As Mts For Stirring Sand?

I think I'm going to take the big step and switch over to gravel. All I have to do is actually FIND the sand I want to use (either sand-blasting or pool filter).... It's not really that easy to locate!

I was wondering if I need to go out and get some MTS for when I make the switch, or if common ramshorm snails would work? My tank is already loaded with ramshorn snails, and when they are young they do bury themselves in the gravel until they reach about 1cm in size. I don't know if they would do the same thing in sand, or even if they did if they had the same effect as MTS. I'm planning on stirring as many as I can out of the gravel when I switch over anyways.

(I know I still need to stir the sand up myself, but a little bit of daily help from snails is a plus!)

Thanks!

Ramshorns don't really bury themselves if given a choice. They'll go around eating what's on the sand, but not what's in it.

Why not get both? You can never have too much help cleaning a tank, and you won't have a population explosion considering you already have snails. :good:

Okay then, both it is! I actually started that tank becuase of a snail, so I never mind having more around. I think that if I ask the lfs I can get a bag of them for nothing considering the girls there spend most of their day removing them from the tanks to be destroyed.

Thank you!
