Do beta fish go good with black mollies? I might get some mollies and I was wondering if I could put them with a betta. I wanted to ask you guys before I got mollies though.

depends on the personality of the betta, I've sucessfull kept bettas with mollies, platies, swordtails and cories. How many mollies do you plan on getting and what size tank?

I am thinking of keeping just a few in my 15 gallon with my mellow male Carmel. About 3 or 4 mollies. Is that O.K. because they have like 20 of them cramped in a 5-10 gallon at the pet store. I might not even get mollies but I know I want a type of fish that can go with a betta in a 15 gallon tank.

Well a full grown mollie needs about 2 gallons, so with a betta you could get like 6 mollies, and remember you need 1 male to at least 2 females. But if you do this make sure to keep an eye on your betta and if he gets to agressive or if the mollies pick on him take him out right away.

I am confident that Carmel is mellow enough. I think I might just change that whole tank into an aquarium. For guppies or something.

my black maolly bullies my females,Ive never had any luck with bettas and mollies though....I personaly would.y try it unless you have a pk male so he don't get nipped and he can get away quicker...If you know what i mean.

Carmel is big. I am more worried about him bullying the Mollies. I think they will be O.K. though.

You can certainly try it, just be careful. It may work out for a week or two and then suddenly not work at all. I've done both and one was absolutely fine, the other was constantly nipping my platies and mollies.

Tbh, you can't be sure he's mellow enough unless you tried it before-I had my cories with my bettas for a while and decided to put them with my most mellow (or so I thought) male, Kyle. He was flaring like crazy and almost hurt them. I moved them with my other male, Kenni, he was supposed to be the agressive one but instead, he left them alone. You can try, although I wouldnt recommend it, but make sure you have a tank handy in case something goes wrong.

You need to be careful in terms of the Mollies as well. I've had problems with my Mollies nipping Guppy tails, and you may have the same problem with a Betta. It's usually a problem with the male Mollies, especially if you have more than one, and not enough females.

In 15 gallons, I'd only do 3, maybe 4 Mollies. They get quite large, if they are given enough room and adequate food. Maybe 2 females, and a male? Or 3 females and a male? Just be prepared for some fry as well. The Betta and the Mollies will most likely eat most of them, but some may survive.

Also, I'd look up a bit of information about Mollies. They can be quite picky about their habitat, and their foods. So just do a little research about them first. :)

I have no experience of my own of this combo, but I have heard other people who have had problems. Mollies can differ quite a bit in temperament, and as they are hybrids of several different species it can be difficult to estimate how large they're going to grow. If they turn out to have any sailfin in them they may grow too large and active for betta comfort. The other problem is that they are quite fussy about water parameters, they do need hard alkaline very clean water (good filtration is a must!), and salt is preferred.

ive got a female in with five Mollies and two Platies, they get along well, they seem a bit wary of her, my one big male Mollie sometimes squares up to her but she stands her ground and they both loose interest

Yes, mollies can be aggressive. I've tried my females with them though and my girls were little bullies. Oddly enough the mollies never fought back they just stood there and took it. My little girls were relentless though!

I may be wrong so anyone out there correct me if I am, but I thought I had read several times that mollies are a brackish water fish and of course, bettas are not. If this is the case, then no, you cannot keep them together.

Sandie, you're right. Mollies like their water brackish and while bettas can tolerate (debatable but I believe it's ok) brackish water, it isn't usually preferred.
