I have a new, but cycled, 75 gallon tank that currently has 2 featherfin synos, 2 female swordtails and 2 female platies. My water is hard and the pH is 7.8. I'm having a hard time deciding what to add to the tank and I've come up with a few possibilities:
  • 3-4 pearl gouramis(3f or 1m and 3f) and a shoal of bleeding heart tetras. My concern with this option is that the featherfins might spook the pearls as they tend to move fairly quickly.
  • 3 female three-spot gouramis and a shoal of larger tetras (emperor, diamond or congo). I am little concerned with the aggressiveness of three-spots.
  • 2 male banded gouramis and a shoal of larger tetras. Would 2 males be ok as my lfs doesn't seem to carry females?
  • a shoal of rainbow fish (boseman or austrailian) . I'm finding a lot of conflicting information about rainbows. Some say nippy, others say peaceful. Some say acidic water others say alkaline.
I'm open to any other ideas as well. But everything in the tank needs to stay there.

Any input is greatly appreciated!!! :thanks:

I'd go with the pearl gouramis and tetras. Pearls are beautiful fish. Do your synos stay at the bottom? If so, you might not have to worry since gouramis tend to stay around the top and middle of the tank. :)

I think the pearls are my first choice too, but I'm a little concerned that the catfish will stress them. The featherfins stay mostly at the bottom, although sometimes they hangout on the back wall of the tank and occasionally they'll do some loops where they go up one side, across the top and back down the other side.

Thanks for the input!
