Hi! fish people(that sounds like some kind of 1950's horror movie monster)

I want to get a 10 gallon tank to put on my dresser, but my parents think that it wouldn't be able to hold one.

so...

Do 10 gallon tanks need stands?

:fish:

Yes and No.

Depends on the strength of the unit you want to put the tank on.

Full Aquarium weight is usually guesstimated at 10 lbs per gallon. So your dresser would need to be sturdy enough to support about 100 lbs consistently.

Not especially made for them, anything that can hold them, but if your parents say it won't hold it best to agree since you don't want 10 gallons of water all over your floor :)

I've used desks, dressers, and entertainment stands for 10gal tanks before, so a stand isn't necessary. As long as the dresser in question can comfortably hold 100-150lbs, go for it.

It should be fine, dressers are often much more sturdily built than 'proper' tank stands anyway. I've got a 4ft on my desk with no troubles.

I've used a night stand to hold my 10 gallon since I bought the tank. I bought the tank and then ran to WalMart and bought the cheapest thing I could get to keep it off the floor. Works like a charm. So, in short and answering your question, you should be fine with a dresser. If a $20 table can handle it, I'd say something that holds a bunch of clothes should be fine. ;) :good:

Thanks for the responses

Actually my dresser doesn't hod clothes any more. -_-

The drawers have been broken for a long time, but the basic structure of the dresser is very strong, I can put all my weight on it and it's still standing.

If something from walmart can support an an aquarium I'm sure my dresser can.

If someone could post a picture of thier tank on something it would probobly help convice my parents.

it might be a good idea to test it with something else that would be of similar weight first. but do remember that structures can weaken over time. while it may seem to be doing fine one day it might just all come tumbling down...has happened to me before and with a smaller tank :)

i dont want to put you off but do you really want a fish tank on there so bad that you might risk massive water damage not to mention possible electrocution if it goes and wets power boards etc??? just something to think about :)
