I m looking into upgrading my lighting system for my 29 g planted tank. The only way I can find to get the wattage I need without spending a small fortune is to diy. I found a website www.ahsupply.com and they make the enclosures for you. Now does that replace my existing hood all together. Am I gonna have to get some sort of glass top with the enclosure. on the website its the 30 inch oak enclosure with a 2x55watt compact strip. let me know if thats all i need or if theres something the websites not saying about existing hood or glass top

Im in the process of building a hood, but I am doing this one, but I scaled it down to fit my 35 gal. I bought a glass top, as it cuts down on the evaporation, and the humidity that will accumulate in the hood (which could short out your lights, if it is too humid)

I see only one flaw with that canopy. It doesn't stay open on it's own and need to be held open by something, making it very difficult to access the tank for cleaning. I would suggest using something more like this:

Canopy Idea 1

Canopy Idea 2

I know they don't look as fancy but, they are more functional.
