my recipe was 2 cups sugar, 1/8 tsp yeast (i added a little bit more after), 1/2 tsp baking soda and warm water. the connection has no leaks in it. however, the yeast was 3 months past expiry. do you think this could be the problem? it still makes bread rise.

also, how long should it take to start producing? it's been a few hours since mixing.

thanks :)

Sometimes I give the canister a light shake and that gets it going. I made a mistake once and purchased bread machine yeast. It works, but it's a bit more sluggish to get going thatn the standard. In the cold winter months, if the house temp is lower, it'll take longer to react as well.

maybe if you go with 1/2 tsp of yeast and 1/4 tsp of baking soda

That could be it too. I use a very full 1/2 tsp and 1/4 tsp of baking soda. I also use less sugar, but my tank is smaller and I alternate CO2 canisters.

yeah it's working now. i guess i'm just really impatient :p

is baking soda the same as bicarbonate of soda,do you remove the co2 reactor tube from the tank at night?

Question 1. Yes it is the same.

Question 2. No, the yeast reaction does not produce enough CO2 to warrant removal at night. I leave mine on all night. Dropchecker will be almost yellow by the time lights go on again, but the fish are fine.

diy kit working great through glass diffuser,i have it positioned near the flow of the filter, but the bubble don't seem to be going right round the tank,is this ok

Mine is just an empty 600 ml mineral water bottle, 1/4 tea spoon of yeast, a pinch of baking powder plus 1 cup of coarse sugar and that's all abt it. At the end of the tube, I placed a small air stone. Working fine for days already.

After I poured water from my household tap to the sugar, yeast and baking powder mixture and making sure the sealed bottle cap is used (not the one with the tubing), I shook the bottle for awhile before doing the necessary connection of the tubing to the aquarium. Within less than an hour, tiny bubbles appeared from the air stone.

are the bubbles supposed to be evenly spread throughout the tank for it to be of any benefit?

No. its more important for the bubbles to be tiny so they are readily dissolved in the water. once dissolved the CO2 will readily spread througout. Hence the use of diffusers. Also if the bubbles are in contact with water for a longer time then they are more likely to dissolve.
