diy canister filter

i am thinking about building a canister filter out of an old beer fermenter,(cleaned of course) i just need to know, where should i put the submersible pump that i need to power it and what media should be used(media needs to be cheap because it's big and will cost heaps to fill)

What filter media have you decided to use? and how big is the beer fermenter which is being used?

The biggest difficulty with home made cannisters is making sure the water goes through the media and not round it. If you can solve that, then homers work okay, but they are usually fiddly.
