I plan on planting my 10 gallon tank. I want my plants to be nice and healthy but I am wondering how they work. I read one artical with the mixture in a bottle and a hole drilled in the cap and placing tubing in the hole and in the power filter. Should I use and Air stone? The recipe calls for 2 cups of sugar and 1'2 teaspoon of yeast. Also how does this work? When water, yeast, and sugar mixed together let off C02? Please help!

yeast + sugar + water = CO2

you can use an airstone, put it in the flow of the filter so the bubbles get pushed around the tank.

I know that. But what I think I was asking is what recipee should I use for a 10 gallon tank.

The mixture is the same, always 2 cups of sugar (220ml each) and so much yeast, the more yeast you add the more CO2 you will get but it wont last as long.

To answer another part of your question, the yeast is a type of funghi which will 'eat' the sugar, and in the process release CO2 and alcahol as waste products. Same way as you use yeast to get bread to rise. If you want to extend the life of your mixes try using a 'super wine yeast' type yeast as these can tolerate higher levels of alcahol, and also add a yeast nutrient in addition to the sugar as yeast actually need more than just sugar to survive, and once these are gone from the water the yeast goes dormant or dies, hence some people find their mixes only effective for about a week.
