I've just picked up a 30x12x15 tank for breeding galaxy rasbora's/celestial pearl danio's. This is going to be my first attempt at breeding, so any advice is appreciated.

What I was thinking of doing was dividing the tank - once one or more of the females are looking pregnant, pop them into the smaller half, and once I see eggs move them back to the normal side.

Does this sound pretty sensible? If so, whats best to use as a divider (and would I need a seperate filter for the fry side?

Thanks
Chris

Any fine mesh wall will be fine, you can always make your own out of a piece of perspex cut to size and drilled. Provided its got plenty of holes then no you wont need a seperate filter and it should still allow circulation.

Another tip often heard about here when breeding danios is to use large marbles as a substrate, there egg scatterers so when they lay, the eggs fall between the marbles and the mature fish cant get at them.

Cheers for that - sounds like a novel solution to a problem I was worrying about - going up and down into the loft every 5 minutes when the females are pregant to avoid them going for the eggs once they've dropped.

you can get some plastic canvas( perforated) from a knitting shop that may fit it ,it comes in sheets and you can silicone them togather if you cant get a big enough sheet ,then silicone paper edge sliders to the side of the tank to secure them in :)

ps, you wont need to go into the shop you can get your mum/wife/granny to go in for you

Lol. My other half is at her wits end with me and fishkeeping as it is, I reckon trying to convince her to do me a favour for one of my tanks is unlikely.

I'll have a look, sounds ideal.

these will breed in spawning mops then u can either remove the spawning mop or remove them :good:

Cheers. I'll do a bit of digging, I've not come across spawning mops before.

How much for a couple with postage?

And would you consider selling your 8 babies? I've done a bit of digging, and apparently its about 4 months to maturity.
