I can get two betta in a 5 gallon tank, divided down the center. Right? I'm kind of new with the whole dividing thing and just want to make sure.

Just a typical rectangular tank right? Sure, it's no problem to divide it. It may be difficult to do if it is oddly shaped. But yeah, 2.5 gallons for two bettas is very good and will make very happy fishies. They love room. Good luck with it.

I want to divide one too! Is a filter a must for a divided 5 gal?

No, honestly, you don't need a filter for ANY betta tank whatsoever. They can handle 100% water changes without issue. Dividing is great. I'd buy a 10-gallon and divide before buying any other size tank. It's a lot more cost efficient in the long run. Go for it!

A 5 gallon is easily divisible. You can purchase a divider from your lfs or you can make it yourself. To make it yourself, you can buy report covers and glue them to the sides with aquarium sealant and slide a sheet of plastic canvas between them. (I lost my link to a very helpful site on this :( ) You don't need a filter, but when you have 5 gallons or more, I would seriously consider cycling your tank. Make sure that you have a filter that can be set to a low setting though, and use that setting. Bettas don't like a lot of current, but most can handle a very gentle one.

I have a 10 gallon stand...and the bottom holds a 5 gal tank as well. Now I can only find the 5 1/2 gal tanks at all my local fish stores. I am assuming it will hold that, there can't be that much difference is there??

And I feel silly...but when u say cycle the water-you mean with a filter set up right? I saw a undergravel one for like $10 would that be okay. I personally dont like them, but I would think they would be okay for bettas?
