I'm trying to set up a 29 US gallon tank, but the only water I can get seems to always have stuff floating in it. Even if I let it run through the filter for a few days, half of it will settle to the bottom and the other half will float around up top. The stuff looks white, and I'm not really sure what it is. My main tank (10 US gallons) had the same problem, but it went away overnight. I tried using an old cotton t-shirt, but that didn't seem to affect it all that much. All my water seems to be this way, no matter what tap I get it from, even water from my reverse osmosis system seems to have it. Are there effective options for filtering the water?

Hi there, are you drinking this water?...because that white stuff in your water doesnt sound to good for your fish's and definatly not for you.

Kind Regards, Thuggerz

Definitely find out what's going on with the water before you add fish to the tank! But if nothing can be done, the Aquarium Pharmacutical's Tap Water Filter could help. They cost around $30. I have the same question that Thuggerz has:

It's gotte worse as of late, and is worse depeding on which focet you get water from. The problem went away overnight for my main tank, but seems like it was just a lot worse with my second tank. I wonder if I brought it somewhere, they could tell me what the stuff was? Maybe a Culligan Man outlet of sorts.

Do you have well-water or city-water? If it's city water, take a sample to them and have them test it. It could also be your pipes. If it's not the water itself, you may want to look into your piping system to see if something is going on there. Hope this helps!

It's city water, I might just do that.

Is it possible to over filter water? Could I possibly get a second filter for the tank?

bring it to your city's water department and have them test it. If your pipes have been saudered recently, this can happen.

do you live in a house or an aprtment?? if youl ive in an apartment/condo, then someone might have done something with the pipes.

have it tested, its not safe to drink if theres crap in there

u can go to the store and buy pure water with no problems and put it in your tank. then u dont need to add any water purifiers and no metal remover. good luck!

You cna buy RO (reverse osmosis) water from a pet store (25-75 cents a gallon) or buy RO water for 25 cents a gallon at those spring water shacks in parking lots and malls, or you can buy bottles of spring water from a supermarket (1-3 dolalrs a gallon)

Keep in mind that when you use RO water, it doesn't have the necessary trace elements that are good for your fish so maybe add a pinch of aquarium salt to each gallon of water.
