i'm sick of little kid coming up to me and asking me if they can put a cool looking oscar in a fish bowl..................................

only thing to ever put in a fish bowl is a frickin betta, i would not even put a 12 cent feeder fish in a bowl.

other then that 10 gallons at least.

I agree with ImperfectFaerie.... 1 gal plus for bettas in my opinion. :good:

EDIT: Do you work at a fish store? Just wondering. :)

In my opinion, Bettas require no less than 10 gallons. Keeping a Betta in a bowl is no better than keeping a glodfish in a bowl. :grr:

well, the bowl might be bigger than a gallon

also lynden, a goldfish grows to 12+ inches, poops a lot and are very active,

so a lazy, 2-3 inch fish that doesn't poop as much isn't that bad

some people do have active bettas, so yeah, get a 10 gallon, but some people's (mine) are very lazy, mine has 5 gallons, and sits on a plant all day

:good: I agree. My bettas used to be in 1.5 gal Kritter Keepers, but they are very active and looked like they could do with more space. So I moved them to a divided tank (3 gals each) and they are now a lot happier. They swim for a while, rest for a bit, add to their bubblenests and seem happy.

So that means I can amass all of my smaller, lazier fishes into a 5 gallon tank? And what about Fantail Goldfish? They only get to around 8'' and are not very active, so I can put ten (or just one) of them into a ten-gallon tank? And what about Gouramis? I guess I could put a Moonlight or an Osphronemus goramy into a 2' tank, since they aren't very active either. Or even better, I could put a single Tiger Barb into a 1 gallon bowl too, especially since they are aggressive with other fish. Or best of all, an Oscar in a bowl

Bettas need proper community tanks to live in, just like any other small, tropical fish. :grr: Like I implied above, would you put an Oscar in a little bowl? Baby Oscars are small and produce little waste. You can hardly blame a little kid for asking to put a Goldfish or an Oscar in a little bowl when he turns around and sees hundreds of bettas in tiny bowls. :grr:

Well, my betta is too agressive to be put in a community tank; he gets his own tank. And lots of bettas have smaller than 10 gallon tanks. Other than that I can see your side.

5 gallons is plenty for a betta aslong as its heated and filtered.

out 2 bettas live in a 5 gallon hex and an 8 gallon tank, they have plenty of room never any water quality issues and they are happy as larry.

anything less than a 5 gallon however is wrong

wooot no argument

GUYS.

Stop argueing. Seriously. We will never come to a complete conclusion. Do what you want, you won't be able to change other peoples minds so don't get them angry by ranting about it.

i acctually think that kids get the idea of putting a goldfish in a bowl from fair or carnivals (im english so i call them fairs). you can buy like half a gallon bowl for £10 or something from a fair that is currently on where i live, expensive because it a fair, and you get blue and white gravel to go in it.
its so pathetic!
the fish is small when won so they fit in the bowl.
a kid would then think this is totally right so any fish that small can go into a bowl.
an oscar, being small at the store, will fit in a bowl. (this is what the kid thinks anyway)
there is no way a kid is gonna be able to understand filters and nitrites and all that malarki and they wont know how big an oscar or goldfish will get.
thats where the topic started.

Coming in from a slightly different perspective: Goldfish should never be kept in a bowl period.

Bettas I believe are fine in enviroments down to 1 Gallon: after all look at their wild habitat: they do get confined to areas this small. This is on the proviso of sufficient heating etc/filtration OR water changes regularly.
Personally i believe that anything over 5 gallon is a waste of good tank space and shouldnt be used for a betta. But heck thats my perspective. :look:
